Phil’s research interests evolved from Solar PV (since 2005), grid storage (since 2009), demand flexibility (since 2012) and most recently energy demand data more generally, including the collection and contextualisation of household smart meter data, observation of trends and responses to interventions and means to safeguard privacy while maintaining data utility for end users and wider research.
As part of these interests we have developed a range of fun tools and instruments
- from Android phone based current clamps to the latest in-home smart meter access devices
- from hand written diaries to smart web tools for activity recording and linking to energy use
- from subjective thermal comfort records to in-home temperature recordings
- from power based non-intrusive load monitoring to audio-classification and labelling of energy data
Phil also teaches courses on Energy Systems and tutors for the Engineering in Society module.
